What does CDC stand for?
CDC stands for Community Development Corporation. Different communities have different needs, therefore the work and priorities of CDCs across Philadelphia will vary. However, the central goal of community development is to improve and strengthen a community. Just a few examples of community development activities are: planting trees; cleaning sidewalks; organizing block captains; community festivals; supporting local businesses; improving and preserving the neighborhood residences; building affordable housing; workforce development initiatives; streetscape improvements; neighborhood gateway projects; working to improve and engage local schools and students; and encourage volunteerism among residents.
What is the CDC’s Service Area?
Our service area is bounded by Fairmount Avenue to the south, Corinthian Avenue to the east, Girard Avenue to the north, and Fairmount Park to the west.
Is the CDC a City-Agency?
No, the CDC is an independent 501(c)3 non-profit organization. While occassionally we may receive grants or other funding through city agencies, we are not part of the city government.
Who provides the funding for the CDC?
The funding for the CDC comes from a variety of voluntary sources. The CDC has been fortunate enough to obtain funding from a number of foundations, in addition to a number of project-specific grants. Most importantly, the generous contributions from the community provide the CDC with critical operating funding through year-round contributions and our annual Fairmount Fling.
I have an idea for a project – who should I talk with?
If you have an idea for a neighborhood project, email us at mail@fairmountcdc.org and let us know! Even if it is something that turns out to be outside of the scope of what the CDC does, we can help direct you to another neighborhood organization or community group who might be able to help you with implementation.
Can I do anything to help?
Yes! The CDC sometimes needs good volunteers for specific events, ongoing projects, and to serve on committees. For more information on how to volunteer, contact us at mail@fairmountcdc.org.
