It's been great to have so many events returning this summer - in-between heat waves - below we have a few more to look forward to in August. Make sure to save the date for the return of Girard Avenue Festival this fall as well, on Saturday, October 1.


The Greater Art Museum Business Alliance has resumed its monthly meetings. We are excited to continue connecting community entrepreneurs and business-owners, and support the growth of the most diverse local business district in Philadelphia. Thank you to everyone who joined us for our latest Greater Art Museum Business Alliance (GAMBA) Meet Up! Together, we shared ideas, questions, successes, and concerns. Also, many thanks to Eastern State Penitentiary for hosting us in their Fair Chance Beer Garden.

The BOX: End of Isolation Tour

August 13 & 14. Separate admission ($20-$50).

“The BOX,” stopping at Eastern State Penitentiary for two nights only, is a piece of transformational theater that asks the audience to re-examine long-held notions of punishment and solitary confinement. It underscores both the horror of solitary confinement and the humanity of people subjected to it, employing stories inspired by true events to bring awareness to what is occurring in correctional institutions across the country. Pop-Up Museum: The Lives of the Officers

August 10-14. Included with admission to daytime tours (& 191FREE0) and Night Tours: Summer Twilight.

For a limited time only, Eastern State presents Pop-Up Museum: The Lives of the Officers. Get a closer look at a selection of artifacts — including firearms, badges, uniforms, and historic locks and keys — and learn more about the daily lives of officers and other staff who worked at EasternState Penitentiary. Philly History Pop Up

Join a free "Philly History Pop Up" at Corinthian Gardens on Wednesday, August 3, 5:30-6:15pm to hear from leaders of Eastern State Penitentiary and Girard College. Learn about the history and current missions of both massive Fairmount institutions, as well as some connections between them. Best for curious adults and kids 12 and up.


LOCATION: The Garden picnic tables in Corinthian Gardens. Enter on Brown Street near Corinthian Ave.


SIGN UP: Drop ins are welcome, but signing up here helps us plan and makes sure you're in the loop with reminders and potential rain location updates.


POP-UP ORGANIZER: The Aug. 3 event is part of a history pop-up series organized by Cara Schneider Bongiorno, a born-and-bred Philadelphian who was the long-time media relations director for VISIT PHILADELPHIA®.
